患慢性支氣管炎、肺氣腫與肺心病的老年人，由於夜間睡眠時副交感神經興奮，迷走神經亢進，導致支氣管平滑肌收縮痙攣而發生哮喘。 哮喘發作時可給氨茶鹼，或異丙基腎上腺素等，時應立即給予吸氧。
有些老年人患有膽結石、腎結石等疾病，當夜間睡眠體位發生改變時，結石移動嵌塞膽道或輸尿管導致痙攣而引起急性腹痛。 有些患有潰瘍病的老年人，由於不節或受涼，加上夜間迷走神經興奮，胃酸分泌增多可致胃痛。
對於因膽結石和腎結石引發的腹痛，應立即變換體位，同時按壓、膽囊穴、關、關元等穴位可緩解疼痛。 胃潰瘍病人則服用654-2等解痙藥以緩解癥狀。
